Silent Night is a 2021 British black comedy horror film directed by Camille Griffin. It is a remake of the 1984 cult classic slasher film Silent Night, Deadly Night.

Plot Summary

Silent Night (2021) takes place on Christmas Eve as a group of old friends gather for a holiday reunion at a remote countryside mansion. The world is facing impending doom as a poisonous cloud spews from a factory and slowly spreads across the earth, leading governments to announce that civilization will end in the next 48 hours.

The group is made up of Nell and Simon who host the get-together at Simon's family estate, along with friends Sandra and Tony and their two kids. Other attendees include Nell's freespirited school friend Bella, along with additional couples and friends of the hosts. However, tensions rise as secrets and resentments from the past come to the surface.

As the news spreads about the approaching toxic cloud that will soon wipe out humanity, panic sets in and the once peaceful holiday gathering erupts into chaos. The group argues over how to spend their final hours and begins to spiral out of control. Some relationships grow closer while others turn violent. They ultimately have to pull together for one final Christmas dinner before the end arrives.

The ensemble cast includes Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Annabelle Wallis, Lucy Punch, and Rufus Jones. They portray complex characters facing an impending apocalypse during what was supposed to be a cheerful holiday celebration. The film provides a darkly comedic look at friendship, mortality, and human nature when faced with annihilation.

MPAA Rating

Silent Night received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association for "strong bloody violence, drug use, and language." This indicates that the film contains graphic violence involving blood and gore, scenes with drug use, and strong or consistent profanity throughout. The R rating means children under 17 should only view the film with a parent or guardian, as the content is too mature for young viewers.

Violence

In one intense scene, a character is tortured through waterboarding and having their fingers broken. There are fights involving punching, kicking, and bludgeoning with objects. Profanity

Silent Night contains frequent strong language throughout the film. There are over 75 F-words and plenty of other profanity like "shit", "bitch", "goddamn", etc. The adult characters curse casually in conversations with each other and sometimes even around the younger characters. 

Some of the language is used in intense scenes of violence and death. Overall, the amount of profanity makes it inappropriate for pre-teen kids but high school age teens have likely heard words like this before, although parents may still find it excessive.

Sex/Nudity

There are a few scenes in Silent Night that contain brief sexual content.

In one scene, a man is shown watching through a telescopic camera lens as a woman in lingerie is pressed up against a window. The camera focuses on the woman's cleavage and bare abdomen. This voyeuristic scene is intended to be unsettling.

There is also a brief scene that implies two characters had sex, with one shown buttoning up their shirt afterwards. However, no graphic nudity or sex is actually depicted on screen.

Silent Night contains several scenes depicting drug use. According to PluggedIn, one character named Playa is shown snorting cocaine. There are also references to his girlfriend being addicted to harder drugs, with track marks visible on her arm. 

IGN mentions a scene where a bag of white powder is shown, implicitly referring to cocaine. Overall, the depiction of recreational drug use, while not pervasive, is a factor parents may want to be aware of.

Age Appropriateness

The violent content, including bloody deaths and disturbing imagery, make Silent Night inappropriate for pre-teens. Parents should use caution if allowing teenagers to view this movie. Due to the level of violence and gore, most experts agree Silent Night should be avoided for pre-teen viewers. Teenagers are better equipped to handle the content, but parental discretion is still advised. 

Having open conversations about the violence and why it's problematic can make the viewing experience safer for mature high schoolers. But overall, Silent Night is too gruesome for pre-teens and likely disturbing for many teenagers as well.

Comparison to Other Christmas Horror Films:

Silent Night contains more graphic violence and gore than many other Christmas horror films like Krampus or Gremlins. For example, the film features intense scenes of characters being shot and bloodily killed with guns, while other holiday horror movies rely more on supernatural scares or comedy. 

Silent Night has a higher body count and intensity of brutal violence compared to most in the Christmas horror genre.

According to the OC Register, it involves "more unpleasantness than an iron maiden factory" compared to other holiday horror films. The level of violence and intensity of scenes is more in line with slasher films like the original Silent Night Deadly Night than family-friendly scares like Elf.

Parents should be prepared for graphic, bloody violence if allowing their teens to watch. It earns its R-rating through disturbing violent content, putting it beyond most other Christmas horror movies.
